Sleeping disorder? The problem may be in your gene

According to the study published Thursday in the journal Cell researchers have found out that gene CRY1 is key to determining a person’s sleep or wake. We wake up in the morning and sleep at night this is our everyday chore but some people have an entirely opposite clock. While people think it is due to one’s own personal preferences the actual secret behind it is this CRY1 gene that is found out in some people. After analysing 70 subjects from different six families, it was found out that some of the subjects have a condition called delayed sleep phase disorder or DSPD. DSPD is a condition where the body clock tends to lag behind that of the average person, causing sufferers to sleep late and wake up similarly late. Carriers of this mutation go to bed 2-2.5 hours later than non-carriers, which makes them feel as if they have a ceaseless jet lag. And the people in these families who did not have any sleeping disorders lacked the gene CRY1. And r necessarily has this mutation, but it does seem to have an effect on a large part of the population. So, how does one overcome this DSPD? Well, while there is no proper medication for it till now, “An external cycle and good sleep hygiene can help force a slow-running clock to accommodate a 24-hour day,” says Patke. “We just have to work harder at it.”
